Trump resurrects ‘51st state’ quip during defence speech

Oct 15, 2025

Speaking at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Trump pivoted from unveiling his “Golden Dome” missile defence concept to a familiar taunt. He said Canada had asked to join the missile shield and recounted telling them they could only get it free if they became the 51st state (Global News).

Trump added that Canada was “having a hard time” because tariffs had shifted investment to the United States, and suggested that “Canada had called” and “wanted in.” No Canadian official has confirmed any such request.

The remarks came days before Prime Minister Mark Carney’s White House visit and underscored the tension between Trump’s populist rhetoric and the reality of deep bilateral integration. While couched as a joke, the comments were mentioned in the company of military leaders and thus revive annexation imagery that many Canadians find unsettling.

Our Take

Trump’s quip may have been delivered for laughs, but there is nothing funny about suggesting annexation, particularly in the company of military leaders. Treating us as a subordinate state, even in jest, implies a lack of respect for our country, our culture and our independence. Here’s an idea: instead of joining their “golden dome”, we can continue buying local, and diversifying our trading partners, to help build our own “economic dome” away from the U.S.
