🍁 72% of Canadians Are Now Avoiding U.S. Products

August 10, 2025

According to a new Ipsos poll, 72% of Canadians say they’re now intentionally steering clear of American products. The shift comes amid ongoing threats from Donald Trump to impose sweeping new tariffs—some as high as 35%—on Canadian exports if he wins in November.

The data reflects a sharp acceleration in Buy Canadian sentiment. While past efforts have often remained symbolic or seasonal, this appears to be a deeper, more sustained shift. The poll also found that nearly half of Canadians have switched away from an American product in the past month, with groceries and household goods leading the charge.

Our Take: It is genuinely heartening to see this kind of alignment. Canadians are rarely united on any single issue, yet here we are—speaking with near one voice about the importance of economic self-determination. This may not be the rallying point we expected, but it is a powerful one. And it is long overdue.

Of course, actions speak louder than polls. Saying you are avoiding American products is not the same as changing your shopping habits, and we should be honest about that gap. But this is not a criticism. It is simply a reminder that intention is the first step—and it is a very encouraging one. The fact that so many Canadians are even thinking in these terms is a shift worth celebrating. We are moving, together, in the right direction. And with a bit more awareness and a bit more effort, we can turn this moment into real momentum.
