🛻 GM Commits 1B+ to Canada and Sierra Trucks to Oshawa

As part of newly ratified three-year agreements with Unifor, General Motors has committed more than C$1 billion to its Canadian facilities and will bring production of the next-generation GMC Sierra Heavy-Duty pickup to Oshawa Assembly.
The Sierra allocation is backed by an additional C$144 million for Oshawa, building on a previously announced C$343 million for next-generation trucks and manufacturing upgrades. Together, GM says its planned investment in Oshawa is now nearly C$500 million. The broader agreements cover more than 4,600 workers at facilities in Oshawa, St. Catharines, Woodstock, and Ingersoll.
The investment reaches beyond Oshawa. GM is putting another C$215 million into St. Catharines Propulsion to make it the sole source for a next-generation transmission. In its official announcement, the company says its planned investments in Oshawa and St. Catharines total approximately C$1.4 billion over the next three years. The commitments were confirmed after workers ratified the new agreements on August 30.
The commitments come as U.S. tariffs place new pressure on the cross-border vehicle, auto-parts, and steel supply chains serving Canadian plants.
Our take
How did this story fly so far under the radar? Trump has spent months trying to push auto production, parts and steel south, yet one of America's largest automakers is committing more than $1 billion to Canadian operations and assigning a next-generation truck to Oshawa. One is political rhetoric. The other is a very large cheque.
Of course, no automaker's commitment is permanent, and Oshawa knows that better than most. But factories, tooling and product allocations are long-term bets, not reactions to next week's headline. GM's money suggests that Canadian workers and plants remain central to its plans, regardless of what Trump says.
This is massive, and Canada should treat it that way. We need to build on the investment with strong infrastructure, skilled workers and stable industrial policy. Trump can say whatever he likes about where vehicles ought to be built. For the next-generation Sierra HD, GM has answered with Oshawa.
